I Could've Told You That...

When I first told my Mom I was a fan of the ganja a few years back she wasn't too pleased. It wasn't the weed itself that bothered her, but the idea of me driving high all the time. Countless times I attempted to explain to her that, if anything, I drove SAFER when I was high but she wasn't having it.

I finally have some evidence to support my argument though, as researchers from Hartford Hospital and the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine did a study and found that smoking weed has at most a minimal impact on driving performance...

"Smoking THC cigarettes caused drivers to drive slower in a dose-dependent manner, while alcohol caused drivers to drive significantly faster than in 'control' conditions."

This article is a few weeks old but still relevant especially heading into the legalization vote this November. It's basically about the use of marijuana by NFL players, as there is a growing number of prospects entering the league who have either admitted to smoking or have tested positive for smoking.

When you think about it weed is ideal for NFL players. It can be used to manage pain, something NFL players endure plenty of with the constant beating they take. Instead of prescribing them countless painkillers which are extremely addictive and easy to abuse, a joint after practice or a game would be a much better option. One player also points out that weed helped him keep up his appetite to maintain his playing weight.

Of course the league would never support its players using weed because the NFL is more concerned with their players' image and marketability than their health.

L.A. City Council Passes Medical Marijuana Ordinance

Basically this ordinance allows the city to close hundreds of dispensaries and also impose new restrictions like requiring clubs to close at 8 p.m., disallowing the use of marijuana inside of clubs, and restricting patients to only one collective.

Personally I think the general idea to limit the number of dispensaries is a good one, although I disagree with some of the proposed restrictions they want to enforce. Hopefully this ordinance can eliminate the clubs that were shady and were opened for the sole intent of profit, where as there are clubs out there who are genuinely concerned with providing patients with high quality medicine at affordable prices.

United States the New Amsterdam?

We've got a ways to go before that happens but it looks like parts of the country are headed in that direction.

Just a few days ago we posted an article about the AMA's support of altering marijuana's status as a schedule I drug and now here's an article about the first weed "cafe" opening in Portland, Oregon. According to the article The Cannabis Cafe will be the first cafe to give medical marijuana patients a location to purchase weed and medicate on-site, styled after the popular "coffee shops" found in Amsterdam.

AMA Changes its Stance on Medical Marijuana

The American Medical Association, the nation's largest physicians organization with about 250, 000 member doctors, has recently urged the federal government to reconsider its classification of marijuana has a dangerous drug with no medical benefit. The AMA's hope is that this will allow more research to be done on marijuana to determine it's medicinal benefits and alternative ways in which patients can receive those benefits.

This seems like another step in the right direction to changing marijuana's classification as a schedule I drug, the same category as shrooms, LSD, MDMA, and heroin, which even the most vehement opponents of marijuana have to admit is a joke. And while I still don't see weed being legalized anytime too soon it appears that at the very least it is being decriminalized and losing some of the stigma the government has worked so hard to ingrain into society.

New Medical Marijuana Policy Issued By White House

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday.

Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws.

The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.

Fourteen states allow some use of marijuana for medical purposes: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

California is unique among those for the presence of dispensaries - businesses that sell marijuana and even advertise their services.

Attorney General Eric Holder said in March that he wanted federal law enforcement officials to pursue those who violate both federal and state law, but it has not been clear how that goal would be put into practice.

A 3-page memo spelling out the policy is expected to be sent today to federal prosecutors in the 14 states, and also to top officials at the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The memo, the officials said, emphasizes that prosecutors have wide discretion in choosing which cases to pursue, and says it is not a good use of federal manpower to prosecute those who are without a doubt in compliance with state law.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the legal guidance before it is issued.

At the same time, the officials said, the government will still prosecute those who use medical marijuana as a cover for other illegal activity. The memo particularly warns that some suspects may hide old-fashioned drug dealing or other crimes behind a medical marijuana business.

In particular, the memo urges prosecutors to pursue marijuana cases which involve violence, the illegal use of firearms, selling pot to minors, money laundering or other crimes.

And while the policy memo describes a change in priorities away from prosecuting medical marijuana cases, it does not rule out the possibility that the federal government could still prosecute someone whose activities are allowed under state law.

The memo, officials said, is designed to give a sense of prosecutorial priorities to U.S. Attorneys in the states that allow medical marijuana. It notes that pot sales in the United States are the largest source of money for violent Mexican drug cartels, but adds that federal law enforcement agencies have limited resources.

Medical marijuana advocates have been anxious to see exactly how the administration would implement candidate Barack Obama's repeated promises to change the policy in situations in which state laws allow the use of medical marijuana.

Shortly after Obama took office, DEA agents raided four dispensaries in Los Angeles, prompting confusion about the government's plans.
